BRIEF BITES
Burn - Get ready for some (controlled) flames! DEEP is planning prescribed burns this spring at Goodwin State Forest in Hampton, Mansfield Hollow State Park, and a 1-acre site in Vernon’s Belding area. The goal? To boost local grassland habitats and support native plants and wildlife.
Award - Big cheers at Skinner Road Elementary in Vernon — Principal Bryan Kerachesky just earned the title of Principal of the Year from the Connecticut Association of Schools! In his eight years at the helm, he’s led the school to national blue ribbon status and continues to mentor other principals across the state.
Cemeteries - Tolland County towns like Andover, Tolland, Union, and Vernon are getting a boost to help care for their historic cemeteries. Thanks to the Neglected Cemetery Account Grant Program, each town will receive $8,000 to preserve these resting places.
Support - Local business Hops 44 (625 Middle Tpke, Storrs) is in the running for “Best Of” in five categories (chicken wings, burgers, beer bar, sports bar, & food truck) for CT Magazine. You can cast your vote here if you’d like to support this (or any) local business!
Seeds - Tolland Public Library’s Seed Exchange is open! Grab up to 5 varieties of veggies, annuals, and perennials (total, not each) per visit.

THE HIVE’S PICK

While we normally feature businesses here, we wanted to do something a little different this week (although not too different). We wanted to put a spotlight on a not-for-profit organization located right in Ellington. At 110 Sandy Beach Rd, to be exact.
I’m talking about PawSafe Animal Rescue. My wife and I are big proponents of adopting rescues (our dogs now, were both rescues - the ones pictured above, as were our previous pups), so I want to help get the word out about this place.
I know that not everyone can take on another animal (or one to begin with), but there are other ways you can help if you’re looking to add some “good” to your karma. They graciously accept donations (pet food is not cheap!) as well as offer volunteer opportunities (always looking for people to walk the dogs, help out with adoption events, etc).
If you’re looking for a new furry friend, you should check them out (they have pictures of all the dogs available)! Oh, they also offer cat adoptions as well if that’s more your speed.

ToCo TRIVIA 🤔
In what year what Tolland County originally formed? |
Last week’s answer: 35.14% got it right, the Old Tolland County Jail was closed in 1968. The jail operated from 1856 to 1968! Learn more about it in our local history section below.

How Tolland County Made Its Own Name in 1785

Tolland County officially stepped into the spotlight on October 13, 1785, right as America was hitting its post-Revolutionary stride. Back then, the people of Tolland, Stafford, Willington, Coventry, Mansfield, Hebron, and Union weren’t content playing second fiddle to Hartford or Windham. They wanted their own corner of Connecticut to call the shots — and they made it happen. These towns were growing fast, full of grit, character, and ambition, and their push for self-governance carved out a brand-new county built on independence and local pride.
The name? A respectful nod to Tolland, England — a tiny village in Somerset that lent its name to a future powerhouse in northeastern Connecticut. And boy, did it live up to it. Tolland quickly became a civic hub, building its county courthouse in 1822, followed by the now-iconic Tolland County Jail (which, fun fact, still stands today as a museum). The area wasn’t just growing — it was thriving, shaping the legal, economic, and cultural heartbeat of the region for decades.
And while Connecticut officially dissolved county governments in 1960, Tolland County never needed a big bureaucracy to make its mark. Its towns have always been driven by community strength, not titles. Today, Tolland County stands as a reminder that small-town collaboration, neighborly resilience, and a touch of colonial charm go a long way. If you call this place home, you’re part of a tradition that’s nearly 250 years strong — and still going.
